Social Impact
The Burden of Eye Diseases
Visual impairment remains one of the most under-addressed public health challenges in India. A significant proportion of blindness and vision loss is preventable or treatable, yet millions continue to suffer due to delayed diagnosis and lack of access to timely care.
Common conditions such as cataract, refractive errors, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and childhood eye disorders continue to impact quality of life, productivity, and independence—especially among underserved populations.
Addressing eye care challenges is not just a health priority—it is an economic and social imperative. Improving vision directly enhances an individual’s ability to learn, work, and live independently. In this context, tackling avoidable blindness and improving productive years of life is a critical step toward realizing the vision of a Viksit Bharat.
Barriers to Eye Care
Despite the fact that a large proportion of vision loss is preventable or treatable, several persistent barriers continue to limit access to timely and quality eye care like
Lack of Awareness & Delayed Diagnosis
Many individuals are unaware of underlying vision problems or the importance of timely eye check-ups. As a result, conditions often go undiagnosed until they begin to significantly impact daily life.
Financial Constraints
The cost of consultations, diagnostic tests, surgeries, and associated travel poses a significant barrier, particularly for underserved communities.
Geographical Challenges
Access to quality eye care remains limited in rural and semi-urban regions, where patients often have to travel long distances to reach specialized facilities.
Limited Access to Specialized Care
Advanced ophthalmic services and trained specialists are largely concentrated in urban centers, resulting in gaps in timely diagnosis and treatment.
Limited Focus on Preventive Eye Care
Regular screenings and early detection programs are often lacking, leading to avoidable progression of conditions that could have been effectively managed if identified early.
How are Addressing These Challenges!
For over 50 years, Lotus Eye Hospital has been committed to making quality eye care accessible, affordable, and impactful. Our initiatives are designed to directly address the key barriers to eye care while uplifting the communities we serve.
Free Community Screening Camps
We regularly conduct free eye screening camps across urban slums and surrounding areas of Mumbai, bringing essential eye care services directly to underserved populations. Going beyond basic vision checks, these camps utilize advanced portable diagnostic equipment to screen for underlying eye conditions and diseases, enabling early detection and timely intervention.
Free Cataract Surgeries
Cataract remains one of the leading causes of avoidable blindness. Through our free cataract surgery initiatives, we restore vision for patients who would otherwise be unable to afford treatment, significantly improving their independence and quality of life.
Affordable Specialty Surgeries
We provide advanced ophthalmic treatments—including specialized surgeries—at highly subsidized and affordable costs. This ensures that patients from all socio-economic backgrounds have access to quality, technology-driven eye care without financial hardship.
School & Anganwadi Screening Programs
We conduct regular vision screenings in schools and anganwadis to identify eye conditions at an early age. These programs play a crucial role in detecting refractive errors and other issues in children, supporting better learning outcomes and long-term eye health.
