Cataract is the clouding of the natural lens inside the eye. When the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, it does not allow light to pass through it when it is transparent. The natural lens is made of a strong, transparent outer covering or capsule filled with a clear gel material. When the gel starts to become cloudy, the incoming light rays are distorted or blocked before reaching the retina at the back of the eye. As the cataract develops, it becomes harder for a person to see.
The transparent cornea is our window to the world. Any disease or trauma affecting this transparency drastically affects the vision of the person. The Cornea Service is a leading center for corneal transplants and the treatment of corneal diseases and conditions. In addition to corneal transplants, physicians in the Cornea Service diagnose and treat corneal dystrophies, abrasions, scars, and congenital corneal problems.
Glaucoma is a condition in which the normal fluid pressure inside the eyes slowly rises as a result of the fluid aqueous humor not being able to drain properly. Instead, the fluid collects and the pressure builds up in the eye and may ultimately damage the optic nerve and loss of vision. If left untreated, an elevated IOP (Intra Ocular Pressure) causes irreversible damage to the optic nerve and retinal fibers resulting in a progressive, permanent loss of vision. However, early detection and treatment can slow, or even halt the progression of the disease.
The retina is the nerve layer that lines the back of the eye and forms the optic nerve. If we think of the eye as a camera, the retina is the film in the camera. In front of the retina is a gel that is about the consistency of egg white. The retina has two parts: the peripheral retina and macula. The large area of the retina that surrounds the macula and makes up 95% of the retina is called the peripheral retina. The peripheral retina gives us vision to the side (peripheral vision). It is this part of the retina that is at work when we see something out of the corner of our eye.
